Houston and Lines Recognized for Distinguished Service and Teaching

Three awards were established by the Board of Trustees in 2004 in honor of George D. ’35 ’85H and Harriet W. Cornell, whose generosity made the award possible. The awards recognize faculty members for outstanding teaching, research, and/or service, and provide each recipient with a stipend.

This College-wide award recognizes faculty who have distinguished themselves and Rollins through outstanding service. This year's recipient, Professor of Psychology John Houston, has set a high standard for service to the College and the Central Florida community.

Since arriving at Rollins in 1989, Houston's teaching has focused on the psychology of work, group dynamics, statistics and research methods, and social psychology.  Of special interest is his research on aggressive driving—one of the most serious social problems facing the United States. And despite the importance of the issue, research on aggressive driving remains surprisingly limited.

Houston's articles have been published in a variety of journals, such as North American Journal of Psychology, Journal of Vocational Behavior, and Educational and Psychological Movement.

Rollins values teaching excellence and the Cornell Distinguished Teaching Award honors that excellence by recognizing Rollins faculty who have distinguished themselves and the college through outstanding teaching. This year, the honor was awarded to Professor of Environmental Studies Lee Lines, who has inspired both students and peers for over sixteen years.

A member of numerous committees on campus such as student life, professional standards, and many others, Lines has maintained an amazing level of standards while never letting his commitment to his students or colleagues suffer. Known for making his classes meaningful, he is incredibly gifted and has a way of getting the entire class enthusiastic and involved about each day’s assignment. As one student quoted, “taking a class with him makes you a better student in all areas because of the way he challenges you to relate to the material; you really have to think and develop thoughtful conclusions that apply beyond the classroom.”

And perhaps the ultimate compliment came from a graduating senior: “I wholeheartedly believe that he deserves this recognition. I walk out of every class amazed at just how much I’ve learned. And then I turn around and do it again and think the same thing.”
