Meghan Thomas (Class of 2011) was recently awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarship to teach English as a foreign language in South Korea. Thomas is one of over 1,500 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2011-12 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.

Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. As a past president of Spectrum and recent recipient of the 2011 President's Award for Diversity and Inclusion, Thomas is an ideal candidate for the program.

Since its establishment in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Program has given approximately 300,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists and scientists the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

"I am most excited about the exchange of language and culture that will be taking place during my year in South Korea," Thomas said. "The program has stressed that this will be the main focus of the experience. I will be living with a host family and learning the Korean language so that we may further cultural exchange. I hope to learn a lot about a culture I have never encountered before."

Thomas will depart for South Korea on July 1, 2011 and return July 14, 2012.
