Rollins Takes Part in Come Out With Pride!

October 14, 2009

Pride“At Rollins we come out with PRIDE!” As the banner traveled around Lake Eola on October 11 for the annual Come Out With Pride parade, 55,000 spectators watched 22 members from SPECTRUM, Safezone and Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) march in support of gay advocacy and rights.

“The participation from Rollins was amazing. We had an incredibly diverse group from our community walk with us, including Holt, Crummer, and A&S students, faculty, staff and alumni. The greatest moment for me was seeing another group of Rollins faculty and staff cheering us on as parade spectators. It shows that we really are a supported and worthwhile group on campus,” said SPECTRUM President Ashley Green '11.

SPECTRUM strives to provide programming and support of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and intersex population at Rollins. The organization hosts programs and events such as Rainbow Monthly Movies, discussions and dialogues on gay culture and rights, National Coming Out Day, and World AIDS Day. SPECTRUM also frequently partners with Safezone, providing GLBTIQQ Ally training to faculty, staff and students of Rollins.

“The theme for this year's event [Come Out With Pride Weekend] is Heroes. The event will honor the LGBT community's unflinching, steadfast determination to achieve full equality for all citizens through celebration of our heroes, our victories, and ourselves,” Metropolitan Business Association President Dr. David Baker-Hargrove said in a statement.

The parade was led by Stuart Milk, the nephew of the legendary Harvey Milk (California's first openly gay man elected to public office).

Since the inaugural Come Out With Pride parade in 2005, Pride events get bigger and better with each passing year, continually shattering attendance records and offering exceptional entertainment, food, music, and fun!
