Rebecca Wilson ‘15 Presents Paper at British Studies Student Symposium
March 21, 2012
While enrolled in Major English Writings II, Rebecca Wilson ‘15 gave a presentation to her class on the image of the "great chain of being" in Alexander Pope's An Essay on Man. Encouraged by her instructor, Professor and Kenan Chair of English Ed Cohen, Rebecca then developed the presentation into a paper on the philosophical underpinning for Pope's poem. She subsequently submitted the paper to the British Studies Student Symposium sponsored by the Associated Colleges of the South.
The paper was accepted, and Rebecca's travel to the symposium, convened at Hendrix College, was supported by a grant from Interim Dean of the Faculty Robert Smither. On her return, Rebecca shared that she had been the only first-year student at the conference and had found herself "out of her depth." From all accounts, however, it’s reported that she did just fine and represented Rollins well.
