Rollins Partners With Fern Creek Elementary School to Dedicate Science Lab
February 18, 2010
Fern Creek Elementary School and Rollins College faculty and staff gathered together at Fern Creek on Friday, Feb. 12 for the dedication of a collaborative effort to create a new science laboratory room for Fern Creek students.
Rollins College Dean of the Faculty and Professor of Sociology Laurie M. Joyner showed support for the Rollins-Fern Creek alliance and efforts in creating a new learning center shared by the enthusiastic students of Fern Creek. Fern Creek Principal Patrick J. Galatowitsch conducted the dedication, stating he was, “amazed and grateful to see the truths of collaboration [between Rollins and Fern Creek].”
Lead advocates of the new science lab at Fern Creek were Rollins College Professor of Biology Eileen Gregory, Lab Manager Ana Rodriguez and Associate Lab Manager Kathryn Hickman. The three were recognized during the dedication with a plaque in honor of their continued collaboration with Fern Creek Elementary.
The new science lab will serve as a learning space for students. The room is equipped with new microscopes, binoculars, electronic balances, calculators and a telescope, and students will be able to explore different facets of science (Physics, Earth Science, and Biology) in this laboratory space. In the future, Gregory and students from her biology courses will include Fern Creek service-learning work in the curriculum as part of Rollins’ initiative to service-learning opportunities. Gregory and her team are excited to conduct new and interesting experiments with the incoming 5th grade class.
Fern Creek Elementary is hosting a Science Night event on Thursday, Feb. 18. Faculty, staff, and students from Rollins College will be present to host informational tables and conduct activities with Fern Creek students and their families.
Community engagement collaborative projects between Fern Creek and Rollins are funded by the Hume Foundation. Because of the Hume Foundation's financial support of community-based learning activities, Rollins has been able to connect with Fern Creek through multiple academic disciplines and programs.
