Jonathan Miller Leads Effort to Protest Unreasonable Scientific American Subscription Price Increase
October 15, 2009
Olin Library Director Jonathan Miller is leading an effort amongst selective liberals arts college libraries to protest an almost 10-fold increase in the institutional subscription price for the magazine Scientific American, from $39.95 per year, to $299 per year.
He drafted a letter and organized 50 library directors from the Oberlin Group to sign the letter, which was then sent to the publisher, Nature Publishing Group, and to media outlets in higher education and librarianship. So far the letter has received notice from The Chronicle of Higher Education, Library Journal, and Inside Higher Ed.
Like many other libraries, the Olin Library has also canceled its print subscription to this magazine.
