April 22, 2010
Kayley Sinclair (Class of 2010) recently received the Partners in Education Award from Orange County Schools, one of the top volunteer honors from the district, for her work at Fern Creek Elementary School. Kayley received the prestigious award for her one on one work with third-grader James Jackson, with whom she's been meeting every week for nearly three years.Kayley is one of over 100 mentors who visit students at Fern Creek. “It’s not a big commitment,” Kayley said. “It’s only an hour a week, so I think every student can commit an hour a week to a student.”
Kayley was also honored as Central Floridian of the Week by Central Florida News 13. “When she comes, I feel happy,” James told News 13. “We do math, reading and playing games, and sometimes we go to the library, or to a playground.”
Her work with James has paid off. Though he’s only in third grade, James is already talking about college, specifically Rollins. “Mostly, we just spend time together each week,” said Kayley, who has been visiting James since she was a freshman. “But I’ve seen a lot of improvement in reading, math, and it’s really exciting to see him excited about college -- especially Rollins College.”
