O'Sullivan and Zhang Awarded the Patrick D. Smith Award
May 28, 2010
Kenneth Curry Professor of English Maurice O'Sullivan and Head of Archives & Special Collections Wenxian Zhang were awarded the Patrick D. Smith Award for their edition of A Trip to Florida for Health and Sport: the Lost 1855 Novel of Cyrus Parkhurst Condit. This award is granted by the Florida Historical Society in recognition of a book of fiction on a Florida history topic.
The book is based on an unpublished manuscript found in the Rollins Archive which appears to have been written in 1855. According to O'Sullivan, the manuscript's importance stems both from its date, which makes it one of the state's first novels, and from its detailed portrait of ordinary life along the St. Johns River in the early 1850s.
