Ashley Kistler Interviewed by Guatemalan News Program
July 09, 2012
Assistant Professor of Anthropology Ashley Kistler was recently interviewed by a Guatemalan news program about her work on cultural revitalization in San Juan Chamelco, Guatemala. On June 29, 2012, Kistler and her colleague, Sebastian Si Pop, were interviewed in Chamelco by journalists from a Guatemalan news program about their children’s book, Li qawa’ Aj Poop B’atz’ ut li resilal xyu’ameb’ laj Chameelk/Aj Poop B’atz’ y la Historia Chamelqueña.
Kistler and Si donated this bilingual book (in Q’eqchi’ and Spanish), which tells the story of Chamelco’s founder, legendary figure Aj Pop B’atz’ and recounts the region’s history, to all of Chamelco’s schools in late June 2012. This book will be used as part of the region’s educational curriculum to help local children to learn about the importance of their history and culture.
