November 02, 2009

Assistant Professor of Economics Tonia Warnecke recently published an article in the International Journal of Pluralism and Economics Education entitled, "Teaching globalization from a feminist pluralist perspective," focusing on the pedagogical approach to her topics course, Gender and Globalization. The article is meant to encourage economics faculty around the world to utilize pluralist approaches in the classroom. The article discusses course objectives, assessment tools and the inherent challenges in developing and teaching, concluding that the benefits of teaching from a pluralist perspective are immensely rewarding for both student and teacher.

Gender and Globalization takes a pluralist approach to the study of globalization. The course focuses on multiple perspectives of economics, encouraging students to develop critical thinking and reasoning skills to their fullest capacity and to learn about and appreciate alternative perspectives.  The course recognizes thgat it is important to encourage pluralism in the economics discipline given that there is a tradition of non-pluralist or monist teaching in many economics programs around the world.

The Economics Department is offering the Gender and Globalization course in the Spring 2010 semester.
